Democratic Presidential Hopefuls Campaign on MLK Day

Kamala Harris

It is also noted that Shirley Anita Chisholm, first black woman elected to the US Congress and first black woman to run for presidentship, had launched her campaign 47 years ago this week. "That's why I'm running for president of the United States", the senator from California said in a video posted on Twitter.

Senator Kamala Harris officially announced her plans to run for president in the 2020 campaign Monday morning during an appearance on Good Morning America. Day, Harris' campaign says that is meant to highlight "a reminder of the aspirational fight for progress that marked Harris' upbringing and that guides her today". Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren of MA and Kirsten Gillibrand of NY have both announced exploratory committees, a step that Harris is skipping.

She launched her campaign on the same day that the country honors the birthday of civil rights martyr, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Although she identifies herself primarily as African-American, as indeed does the USA media, Harris has spoken in the past about her influential Indian past that involved summer holidays in Chennai's Besant Nagar, where she visited her maternal grandfather, P V Gopalan, a freedom fighter and an Indian diplomat.

While avoiding directly engaging Trump, Harris has accused the President of stoking racist and xenophobic rhetoric, while aligning his administration with white supremacists at home, and cozying up to dictators overseas.

Before her 2016 victory in the Senate race, Harris made her career in law enforcement.

As one of the earliest congressional critics of President Donald Trump's immigration policies, Harris has pushed hard for a deal to protect from deportation those immigrants who came to the country illegally as children, a group known as Dreamers. Elizabeth Warren of MA and Kirsten Gillibrand of NY - were also appearing at King-centered events.

She became San Francisco's first female district attorney in 2003. when she was first elected as California's attorney general in 2010, she was the first African-American and the first person of South Asian descent to hold the job.

This announcement comes with little surprise as most expected Harris to throw her hat in the ring. Kirsten Gillibrand of NY have public events scheduled, as do a number of other possible contenders, including former vice-president Joe Biden, former NY mayor Michael Bloomberg and senators Cory Booker and Bernie Sanders.

She is framing her campaign through her courtroom experience. One of just three black lawmakers now serving in the Senate, Harris plans on embracing that background in what will likely be a large and diverse Democratic primary field.

Two candidates who have already opened exploratory committees - Sens.

Politico reports: 'Harris will base her campaign in Baltimore, with a second office in Oakland, according to her aides. "You can't be the Democratic nominee without them", Symone Sanders said, adding that the black community's overwhelming support for Clinton was "definitely a big barrier" between the Bernie Sanders and the 2016 nomination.
