Kamala Harris announces on MLK Day she'll run for president

Democratic senator and California's former Attorney General, Kamala Harris (54), launched her presidential campaign for 2020 on Monday during her appearance on ABC's "Good Morning America". Day that cuts to the heart of a potentially history-making candidacy. The senator launched a witch hunt into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh before the sexual assault allegations broke, and she recently launched an inquisition into another Trump judicial nominee over his membership in the Catholic charity the Knights of Columbus.

The California senator's logo is a nod to Shirley Chisholm, the first woman and African American to seek the nomination for president in a major political party, in 1972.

Vowing to "bring our voices together", Harris would be the first woman to hold the presidency if she succeeds. But Sen. Harris isn't the only troubling Democratic candidate.

It's that background which will endear Harris to left-wing primary voters while pushing away pro-life Americans.

Harris had been expected to run from around the time she was elected to the U.S. senate in 2016, the year Trump swept into the White House in an upset victory over Hillary Clinton.

During an emotional exchange between Harris and Professor Christine Blasey Ford, Harris said she believed Ford and praised her courage for coming forward.

Her first campaign stop will be on Friday in Columbia, South Carolina, a Harris aide said, while revealing some early hires Monday.

In a memoir Harris describes the heartache of moving from Oakland to chilly Montreal so her mother Shyamala Gopalan, a breast-cancer researcher, could take a job at McGill University. They divorced when Harris was young, and her mother raised her and her younger sister, Maya.

Senators Elizabeth Warren of MA and Kirsten Gillibrand of NY have both launched exploratory committees. The question has become an early litmus test for what's expected to be a sprawling field with a record number of women.

"Those folks don't want a wall".

"There are fundamental flaws in the criminal justice system and. this criminal justice system needs to be reformed", she said.

Harris' home state of California has also moved up its primary to Super Tuesday-but that will also be a tough battle given the expense of driving a message on television in the Golden State. Harris has won three statewide elections in California, giving her a potential leg up over opponents planning to compete in the vast and expensive state.

Kamala Harris made it official, announcing her presidential plans on Martin Luther King Day.

"On all of those points, I feel very confident about my ability to lead", she said.

The only notable mark on her record fighting for LGBTQ rights was when Harris argued that two transgender California inmates should not receive gender confirmation surgery.

If the post-Obama Democratic Party is the party of women, especially after the results of the most recent midterms in November 2018, Harris aligns with what the party has come to represent.

When she ran in 2003 and unseated her onetime boss, San Francisco District Attorney Terence Hallinan, she became the first black woman to be elected district attorney in California. Until past year she scoffed at legalizing marijuana, so she was basically Jeff Sessions in a dress. But Warren isn't running primarily on those issues; she's running on economic ones.
