Kamala Harris begins presidential campaign

Kamala Harris lays out the core ideals of her 2020 campaign in her new book ‘The Truths We Hold

Sen. Kamala D. Harris, the California Democrat and presidential aspirant, lamented on Monday the lack of congressional action on gun control, saying a solution would have been possible after the 2012 massacre of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., if only lawmakers had been placed in "a locked room, no press, no one, nobody else" and required to examine "the autopsy photographs of those babies".

The senator from California is speaking at a rally in her hometown of Oakland, the formal kickoff of her campaign for the nomination.

MA senator Elizabeth Warren and South Bend Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg have announced exploratory committees - used to determine whether a potential candidate should run for office.

Ms Harris, known for her rigorous questioning of Mr Trump's nominees, has vowed to "bring our voices together". "And we are here at this moment in time because we must answer a fundamental question: Who are we?"

She was also asked early on about the rise of racism and hate crimes that coincided with Donald Trump's presidential campaign and hs thrived under his presidency.

DeJear has since been courted by several Democrats taking steps toward running for president. She announced her candidacy yesterday and followed up with a speech before a large crowd in Oakland, California (video below, transcript here).

"And guys, let us understand what is happening here: people in power are trying to convince us that the villain in our American story in each other", Ms. Harris said, adding that "age-old forms of hate with new fuel", including racism, sexism and homophobia were real in America. "Of the people. For all the people".

"I've heard people say - when I ran and ran as the first woman who would win - [people would say] 'People aren't ready, ' 'Oh it's not your time, ' 'Nobody like you has done that before, '" Harris told the audience.

Senators Elizabeth Warren, of MA, and Kirsten Gillibrand, of NY, have announced exploratory committees. During her conversation with CNN's Jake Tapper, a man in the audience asked what she thinks of the notion that Democrats would have a better chance of winning the 2020 election with a male candidate.

Harris, a former prosecutor and attorney general in California, chose her slogan because "Kamala Harris, for the people" was the phrase she would say in court. "That's exactly what's going on with Medicare", Oskoui said.

If elected, Harris would be the United States' first female president. Harris is starting her 2020 campaign by telling them they are wrong.

Her platform will include progressive policies including debt-free college and "Medicare for all" - allowing Americans to opt into government-run health coverage. 'Cause she's the only one in the news right now. When CBS "60 Minutes" anchor Anderson Cooper described her plan as "radical" in a January 4 interview, Ocasio-Cortez responded, "I think that it only has ever been radicals that have changed this country".

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) on Monday endorsed Sen.
