Supreme Court bars Guaido from leaving Venezuela, freezes accounts

"I've chose to break diplomatic and political relations with the imperialist US government".

Although in opposition hands since 2015, parliament has been sidelined since 2016 as the regime-loyalist dominated Supreme Court annuls its every decision.

"What I asked President Putin is to maintain constant contact, provide support at the diplomatic and political levels at the United Nations and defend the truth of Venezuela internationally", he said.

Maduro's comments were published on Wednesday as the fight for control of Venezuela escalated with the government preparing an investigation into self-declared interim president Guaido, and new street protests planned.

She said Moscow and Beijing have grown wary of USA and European foreign interventions after their decisions to help topple the governments of Iraq in 2003 and Libya in 2011.

With the increased penalties on Venezuela, the Trump administration aims to force Maduro to cede the presidency as he loses support from the armed forces, whose continued loyalty to him has been crucial to his retaining power.

Earlier Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo certified that Guaido had authority to take control of bank accounts that Venezuela's government has in the Federal Reserve Bank of NY or any other U.S. -insured banks.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signed off on the order last week, which was then followed on Monday, January 28, by US sanctions targeting Venezuela's state oil giant PDVSA, the cash-strapped government's main source of hard currency.

The oil-rich country is already reeling from a deep economic crisis that has pushed millions into poverty and driven 2.3 million more to migrate.

He also called on the European Union to level "more sanctions" against Maduro's government.

"While the general belief is that Canadian heavy barrels should benefit with the demise of Venezuela, the notional degree of market share up for grabs for Canada is not as large as for competing countries", they said.

The protests were called to coincide with an historic date for Venezuelans, the anniversary of the 1958 coup that overthrew military dictator Marcos Perez Jimenez. The opposition argues Maduro's re-election last May was a sham.

Mr Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo all issued statements proclaiming USA recognition of Mr Guaido and saying the U.S. would take all diplomatic and economic measures necessary to support a transition to a new government.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Mr Trump repeated a travel advisory from the US State Department, telling US citizens not go to Venezuela.

Despite alleging Trump wanted him dead, Maduro said he was ready to meet him "wherever he wants", but thought the prospect unlikely given what he described as attempts by Trump's advisers to prevent it.

The UN human rights office says security forces in Venezuela detained almost 700 people in just one day of anti-government protests last week, the highest such tally in a single day in the country in at least 20 years.

More than 40 people were killed and 850 detained in anti-Maduro protests last week, according to the United Nations.

The poll was boycotted by the opposition in protest at the detention, barring and exile of many of their most prominent leaders.

Meanwhile, a rebel military officer who Maduro has accused of plotting his overthrow has been arrested after sneaking back into Venezuela amid the country's upheaval.

"It will be really unusual", she said.
