The shutdown today: Trump lashes out after Dems reject offer

President Donald Trump is lashing out at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for rejecting his proposal to exchange temporary protections for some immigrants for $5.7 billion for his border wall.

They assailed Trump's new offer as cynical, noting that it was the president who - by moving earlier to end the DACA program protecting 700,000 young immigrants and to expel about 300,000 others in a separate program - had placed in jeopardy many of those for whom he now offers temporary protection.

The president tweeted: "Nancy Pelosi and some of the Democrats turned down my offer yesterday before I even got up to speak".

As indicated in the jab at "Nancy" at the end of that Tweet, Trump also continued to attack Speaker Pelosi, calling her irrational and claiming that she would have some say over the condition of the streets in the City of San Francisco.

"Trump proposes amnesty", tweeted conservative firebrand Ann Coulter. The offer would also give a three-year extension to 300,000 people from El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua and Sudan who are living in the USA under the temporary protected status program.

In a briefing with reporters, Vice President Mike Pence defended the proposal from criticism from the right.

"Initial reports make clear that his proposal is a compilation of several previously rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable and in total, do not represent a good faith effort to restore certainty to people's lives", Pelosi said in a statement. "It also still includes almost $6 billion for the president's wasteful, ineffective border wall, rather than smarter, more effective border security measures that I support, like increased technology at ports of entry", a statement from Levin said.

It is unclear if Trump will be able to convince at least seven Democrats to vote for his proposal. He still wants $5.7bn (£4.5bn) to fund the wall.

The Dreamers are now protected from deportation under a programme that allows them to work but not get citizenship.

Pelosi and other Democrats call for Trump to delay his scheduled State of the Union address until after the government shutdown.

The partial shutdown is now in its fifth week.

After Moore invited Trump to North Carolina, however, that state's Democratic Party criticized the gesture, calling it an attempt to distract voters from news that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had questioned a Republican state legislator about an anonymous letter claiming Moore had pushed legislation favorable to one of his legal clients, the News & Observer of Raleigh reported.

Democrats control the House, while Republicans control the Senate.

White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney also sought to increase the pressure on congressional Democrats in advance of Tuesday, the deadline for the next federal pay period and the day officials said McConnell would begin to move on legislation.

"I've been talking about barriers for a long time", Clyburn said. But Democrats says talks on border security should occur only after the government is reopened.

Trump declared from the White House that "both sides in Washington must simply come together", adding that he was there "to break the logjam and provide Congress with a path forward to end the government shutdown and solve the crisis on the southern border".

Some 800,000 government employees have not seen paychecks or have been furloughed for nearly a month now with the shutdown hitting its 29th day. The Trump administration said in September 2017 it would rescind DACA but it remains in effect under court order.

Without action by Congress and Trump, hundreds of thousands of federal employees are also set to miss their second paycheck on Friday. "But you've got to start by reopening the government", US Senator Mark Warner said on NBC's "Meet the Press". He also said there would "no big push" to deport those already living in the USA without permission.

Top Democratic aides are criticizing Trump's offer because it isn't a permanent solution for Dreamers and because it includes money for the wall, which the party strongly opposes.

"She is the lead Democrat by virtue of her title and majority status", explained Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VVA).
