UK PM's office says MP Brexit moves 'extremely concerning'

Prime Minister Theresa May listens to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn speaking after losing a vote on her Brexit deal in the House of Commons London. Tuesday

British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Monday that she would try to break the deadlock over her Brexit deal by seeking further concessions from the European Union on a backup plan to avoid a hard border in Ireland.

She said cancelling Article 50 was the only way of ensuring what Ms Cooper wants: "The only other guaranteed way to avoid a no-deal Brexit is to revoke Article 50, which would mean staying in the EU".

Mrs May made no specific proposals on the backstop, which is created to ensure an open border in Ireland after Brexit, but has raised concerns about the possibility of the United Kingdom being trapped in a customs union with the EU for an indefinite period.

She also committed to protecting workers' rights, being more "inclusive" in how the future relationship with the European Union was discussed in parliament, and abolished the fee for European Union nationals to register for settled status in the UK.

Mr Corbyn said the amendment allowed MPs "to end this Brexit deadlock" and prevent the "chaos" of leaving the European Union without a deal.

But Mrs May will not be able to impose her own position on the party or even her government.

Mrs May sought to reassure MPs that they will be given "a proper say and fuller involvement" in establishing the UK's position in negotiations on future relations with the EU.

The logic of the government deal's defeat meant the PM "must change her red lines" or at least be clear on which ones were negotiable, he said.

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox warned of a "political tsunami" if MPs fail to deliver on the 2016 referendum vote to leave the EU.

His actions have led to many calls for his deselection from leading councillors and party officials, with the association chairman Philip Sagar saying people are telling him they will no longer vote Conservative should he remain the MP.

Some MPs saw the wording as a significant shift in narrowing Labour's choices for what it will eventually support in the Commons.

Labour's Hilary Benn has tabled an amendment to the Government motion calling for a range of indicative votes on various Brexit options.

It is understood she will focus on the possibility of changes to the backstop mechanism, created to ensure there's no hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic, if a broader trade deal can not be agreed.

Ahead of that date, a number of amendments are being tabled including one endorsed by the Labour leadership that is designed with breaking the Brexit deadlock and reducing the chances of a no deal.

HuffPost UK understands that some shadow ministers will insist that the "legislation" outlined in the Corbyn amendment would include two options: "remain" and a credible Leave option.

May said that after hearing concerns of around three million European Union nationals in Britain, she was scrapping the fee.

Responding to Schinas' comments, British Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman said Britain would do everything it could to prevent a hard border.

Clarity from London is some way off: lawmakers have so far put forward six amendments with proposals for a delay to Brexit, a new vote and even for parliament to grab control of the process.

"The Irish government will not support the re-emergence of a border", he said, adding that without the backstop it becomes "very, very difficult". "After the result of the vote in the House of Commons, we said come closer to a possibility of a no-deal Brexit".

But if the backstop were scrapped, he said most of the opposition from eurosceptics in May's party would be removed.
