US Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard to run for president

"I have chose to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", Rep. Gabbard, 37, an Iraq War veteran as well as the first Hindu and first Samoan-American elected to the U.S. Congress, told CNN.

She is the latest to join what is expected to be a crowded Democratic primary field before the November 2020 presidential election. After taking oath of office in 2013 on the Bhagavad Gita - a first in the US Congress - Gabbard said her practice of Hinduism awakens the karma yogi in her, motivating her to serve others without thinking about rewards.

More recently, Gabbard stirred controversy among fellow Democrats when she issued a statement accusing some of them of "religious bigotry" for questioning whether a judicial nominee's membership in a Catholic fraternal organization would affect his ability to apply the law.

"There is one main issue that is central to the rest, and that is the issue of war and peace". Gabbard said she was concerned about a number of challenges facing the American people that she wants to help solve, including health care access, criminal justice reform and climate change. She is said to have supported in 2014 a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage nationwide, but later reversed her opinion and applauded a Supreme Court decision to legalise gay marriage across the US. In January, she met with Assad without informing leaders in her party, and she dismissed his opposition ― including rebels backed by the United States ― as "terrorists". Gabbard remains popular with some liberals but will have serious competition with other candidates on the left flank of the party. By the middle of her second term, she was getting asked if she might one day run for president. She also was one of the first female combat veterans elected to Congress ― deployed to Iraq from 2004 to 2005, and to Kuwait from 2008 to 2009 as a member of the Hawaii Army National Guard.

Big Island Video News will have a deeper analysis, with video, of Rep. Gabbard's political positioning in recent years, which has served to establish her as a maverick among Democrats. "I look forward to talking with you more about this in the coming days".

And Harris is an Indian American from her mother's side and African American from her father's.

"I think that after seeing [Gabbard's] continued lack of fighting for human and civil rights, that this was - for our members across the state - enough was enough", he said.

Rania Batrice will manage Gabbard's campaign. Her decision to meet with [Syrian President Bashar] Assad previous year in a undisclosed trip to Syria rattled both sides of the political aisle and drew accusations that she was giving legitimacy to a war criminal. Former Vice President Joe Biden and former Rep. Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke (D-TX) are also reportedly considering running for president.
