USA authorities fire tear gas across border to repel Central Americans

As U.S. immigration authorities have slowed admissions for asylum seekers, thousands of caravan migrants have lingered in Tijuana waiting for a chance to present themselves at ports of entry or, in some cases, cross the border illegally.

Twenty-five of the migrants, including two teenagers, were arrested after making it over the border fence.

More than a dozen migrants were apprehended after 150 migrants tried to climb the border fence in San Diego, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement that the gas was aimed at rock throwers on the Mexican side who prevented agents from helping children being passed over the concertina wire.

A person who spoke to Reuters did not witness any rock throwing on Tuesday but reported that at least one migrant appeared to have been hit in the head by a tear gas canister.

Some migrants began throwing rocks over the fence at agents and officers, according to the agency.

However, an Associated Press photographer said they saw rocks thrown only after United States agents fired the tear gas.

The AP photographer was on the Mexican side of the border, while border patrol agents who provided the information for the CBP statement were on the us side. The area is flat near the highway, then slopes sharply downward closer to the fence, where most of the migrants were clustered.

This video shows the dramatic scenes on Tuesday, January 1. The agency says 25 migrants were detained.

Under CHP's use of force policy, the incident is being reviewed.

Co-host Brian Kilmeade pushed back on any criticism that President Donald Trump's calling for a border wall was a midterm election issue before saying "Our border is in chaos".

The migrant caravan left Central America in October and travelled 4,300km (2,600 miles) to Tijuana in the hope of reaching the United States and requesting asylum. Others have found jobs in Mexico and tried to settle there.

Border Patrol came under scrutiny in December for using tear gas when a large group of migrants previously attempted to cross into San Diego. It affected the migrants, including women and children, as well as members of the press.

Trump is now locked in a fight with congressional Democrats over funding for the border wall that he wants to build.

With little time left until Democrats officially take over the House on Thursday, Trump reportedly called for a border security briefing at a White House on Wednesday to discuss the stalemate with leaders of Republicans and Democrats in both congressional chambers.
