ISIS schoolgirl Shamima Begum to lose United Kingdom citizenship, says family lawyer

Teen who fled Britain to join Islamic State now pregnant wants to come home

When a 19-year-old British teenager who ran away to join ISIS in Syria announced her desire to return home, it blew open the long-simmering question of what governments should do with returning jihadis and their families.

However, Home Secretary Sajid Javid's removal of ISIS bride Shamima Begum's United Kingdom citizenship is likely to be reversed, unless she has dual nationality, legal experts have said.

The copy of the Home Office letter handed to her said: "Please find enclosed papers that relate to a decision taken by the Home Secretary, to deprive your daughter, Shamima Begum, of her British citizenship".

Lord Carlile, former independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, said Ms Begum could challenge the decision, and described it as a "complex issue" that could take a while to resolve.

"They are obviously very happy and joyous that Shamima has successfully given birth and that she's healthy", he said.

"All German citizens - including those who are suspected of fighting for the so-called Islamic state - have a fundamental right to travel back into Germany", a German foreign ministry source said Sunday. "If he gets sent back to prison in Holland I can just wait for him while he is in prison". British law prevents citizenship from being revoked if that would render the individual stateless.

As her son was born before the move to deprive her of her citizenship, the child would be unaffected by the decision, Javid indicated. She has said she wants to return to Britain and raise her child quietly, but many of her statements also suggest she still holds extremist views.

The move comes after the teenager returned to the public eye when she was found heavily pregnant living in a refugee camp in northern Syria.

Speaking with ITV News on Monday, Begum said she does "feel bad" for those affected by Islamic State's action.

"Family are very disappointed with the Home Office's intention to have an order made depriving Shamima of her citizenship", Begum's lawyer, Mohammed T Akunjee, wrote on Twitter. "I'm not going to go back and provoke people to go to ISIS or anything, if anything I'm going to encourage them not to go because it's not all as it seems in their videos".

She said: "I'm a 19-year-old girl with a new born baby".

If Shamima Begum decides to appeal the decision to impose deprivation of citizenship order she has 28 days to appeal to the Special Immigration Appeals Commission.

The Home Office letter read: "Dear Mrs Begum".

Shamima Begum travelled to Syria from the Bethnal Green via Turkey with two of her school friends in 2015.

"I didn't know what I was getting into when I left".

She asked The Times: "What do you think will happen to my child?"

Begum also spoke of witnessing a decapitated head, which didn't faze her because it was of a non-Muslim, and rationalised the Manchester bombing in which 23 - mostly children and young people - were killed because it was "justified" as part of a war between Islam and the West.
