Ramos asked bench if he should get booked

Pedja Mijatovic

UEFA have launched an investigation that could rule Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos out of a potential Champions League quarter-final after he admitted getting booked on goal in Wednesday's 2-1 win at Ajax Amsterdam.

Should holders Madrid progress to the quarter-finals, Ramos would have a clean slate for the final stretch of Europe's elite competition, which his side have monopolised since 2016.

It's an age-old tactic but one which is rightly against the rules.

Usually, it's very hard to prove that a player has got themselves booked on goal.

At the end of the match in mixed zone the central defender declared he had searched for the foul warning and he later recanted his statements on his own Twitter social network account, so UEFA opened a process of investigation.

"The truth is that, given the result, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't something I had in mind", Ramos said after the game.

"It is not to underestimate the opponent nor to think that the series is over".

"In a game with a lot of tension and feeling and excitement, you have to make a decision in seconds".

The 32-year-old was also seen communicating with the bench prior to making the tackle.

Which is why his antics, and subsequent comments, in last night's European clash with Ajax will come as a surprise to absolutely no one. In doing so, Ramos must be hoping to avoid a sanction, but it could well be too late.

When asked about Bale, he added: "I'm very happy with everyone's performance". I was referring to forcing the foul, a foul that was inevitable.

"Yes, but I had no choice".

"It was a risky counter-attack in the 88th minute, with the game and the tie open".

Ramos added that, had he wanted to pick up a yellow card on objective, he could have done so in a group game against Roma because "we were already classified as first" and the last game against CSKA "was inconsequential".

He said: "I was there when players like John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole were at the club of a generation where that allegation was also aimed towards those guys and I never saw it for a moment".

Are UEFA going to believe that?

The full back was charged by UEFA's disciplinary committee for "receiving a yellow card on purpose" and was suspended for their final group game against Borussia Dortmund and their last-16 first leg against Paris St Germain. Have your say in the comments.

Should Ramos receive a longer ban?
