Schumer Enters Fray as Trump’s Clash with Intel Chiefs Heats Up

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc with US President Donald Trump

"Be careful of Iran". On Twitter Wednesday morning, Trump suggested that the intel community "go back to school" to get educated on the current threats to the U.S.

"The post-World War II worldwide system is coming under increasing strain amid continuing cyber and WMD proliferation threats, competition in space and regional conflicts", Mr Coats said, using the acronym for weapons of mass destruction.

"We assess that foreign actors will view the 2020 USA elections as an opportunity to advance their interests", Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, told the Senate intelligence committee at the worldwide threats hearing.

In his arguments posted to Twitter, Trump accused Tehran of actively seeking nuclear weapons, reiterating the justification he gave for withdrawing previous year from a multilateral treaty on Iran.

That view stands in stark contrasts to comments from President Donald Trump, who in June declared that North Korea was "no longer a nuclear threat", citing his talks with leader Kim Jong Un.

Coats pointed out that Kim Jong-un's pledge in Singapore to pursue the "complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula" - which Trump and Pompeo portrayed as a historic breakthrough - was no more than "a formulation linked to past demands that include an end to United States military deployments and exercises involving advanced USA capabilities".

"The Intelligence people seem to be extremely passive and naive when it comes to the dangers of Iran". Under the 2015 deal, Iran agreed to restrictions on its nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. "No testing, getting remains, hostages returned".

Kim committed to denuclearisation after meeting with Trump a year ago.

The intelligence community "continues to assess that it is unlikely to give up all of its WMD stockpiles, delivery systems, and production capabilities", Coats said, referring to weapons of mass destruction.

It's the first time in about a month that the security adviser, considered a hardliner within the Trump administration, has openly spoken about North Korea.

"Now a whole different story". He said afterwards that the two sides had made "a lot of progress" on denuclearization.

Having nuclear weapons is seen as "critical to regime survival", it reads. "Decent chance of Denuclearization", Trump said on Twitter.

It used to be that finding the tiniest gap between the statements of a political leader and his intelligence chiefs would make for front-page news.

President Trump has focussed his return fire on his intelligence chief for now.

"We'll be announcing the location and. the exact date it will be, it'll be end of February", Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. While his top intelligence officials warned about Russia's continuing efforts to conduct influence operations, Trump continued to dismiss any notion that Russian Federation had interfered in American elections.

But more than eight months later, USA intelligence officials testified that there is no indication Iran is now attempting to develop a nuclear weapon and told lawmakers that Tehran remains in compliance with the agreement despite the U.S. withdrawal.
