Virginia Governor Ralph Northam says "I'm not going anywhere"

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam says

On Feb. 1, the website Big League Politics published a page from Northam's medical school yearbook, which showed a man in blackface standing next to someone in a Ku Klux Klan hood. "There's no better person to do that than a doctor".

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam referred to slaves as indentured servants while speaking about his blackface scandal on CBS This Morning.

In addition to his botched slavery comments, Northam also addressed the other scandals facing his fellow top Virginia Democrats.

Patrick Hope, a fellow Democrat and member of the Virginia House of Delegates, announced Friday that he meant to introduce articles of impeachment against Fairfax unless he resigned by Monday.

If all three men resign, House Speaker Kirk Cox, a Republican, would be next in line for the governorship. A second accuser recently came forward against Fairfax, saying he raped her while they were students at Duke University in 2000.

After staying out of sight since he faced the press on February 2 to deny he was pictured in the racist photo on his yearbook page, but admitting that he had worn blackface on another occasion, Northam, 59, returned to the public eye to attend the funeral of a slain state trooper.

"Fairfax can no longer fulfill his duties", the Democratic caucuses of both the state House and Senate said in a joint statement.

He said he is monitoring the situation involving Democratic Lieutenant-Governor Justin Fairfax, who is denying two sexual assault allegations, but that he has not made any decisions about who he might appoint as a replacement if Fairfax heeded calls to resign.

Mr Fairfax denied the allegations and said he was the victim of a smear campaign. Fairfax released a statement on Saturday acknowledging both interactions with the women, but said both instances were consensual.

According to Watson's attorneys, former classmates have provided statements corroborating the allegations and that she "immediately told friends that Fairfax had raped her".

The Democrat defended his vow to stay in office despite widespread calls for his resignation.

Ralph Northam told CBS Sunday morning that he's "not going anywhere", days after a racist yearbook photo resurfaced.

She quipped, "Also known as slavery..."

Northam has pledged to remain in office despite public pressure.

"It's obvious from what happened this week that we still have a lot of work to do", he said in an interview with The Washington Post on Saturday.

Northam defended Attorney General Mark Herring (D-Va.) who also admitted to wearing blackface, claiming that he regrets putting Herring in the position where he felt he must admit to his past wrongdoings.

Attorneys for a woman who has accused Virginia's embattled lieutenant governor of sexual assault say their client is "prepared to testify at impeachment proceedings and to cooperate with law enforcement in any investigation".

A copy of the resolution, obtained by CNN, reads, "the House of Delegates believes all allegations of sexual assault must be taken with the utmost seriousness", and describes the allegations made by the two women as "credible in nature".

It's unclear who the people in the picture are, but the rest of the page is filled with pictures of Northam and lists his undergraduate alma mater and other information about him.
