Boeing 737 Max 8 makes emergency landing in Orlando, Fla

A number of grounded Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft are shown parked at Victorville Airport in Victorville California

The crew of the Southwest Airlines plane declared the emergency shortly after departure on Tuesday and returned to Orlando International Airport.

Southwest Airlines, the operator of the flight, announced that the plane quickly and successfully made an emergency landing after "a performance issue with one of the engines shortly after takeoff".

The New York Times reported Monday that pilots from five airlines tested current and updated software on a Boeing flight simulator.

Boeing has flown test flights of its 737 MAX to evaluate a fix for the system targeted as a potential cause of the crashes, two sources familiar with the matter said Tuesday.

The FAA announced the grounding of more than 70 Max aircraft in operation in the United States three days after the Ethiopian Airlines crash, and after reports of similarities between that March 10 crash and the Lion Air Flight 610 plane that crashed in Indonesia on October 29. Just two people were on board.

Another report has suggested that the pilots, who flew the plane prior to them encountered similar issues, but managed to figure out the solution on their own.

The emergency landing comes as federal regulators continue to investigate two deadly crashes involving the plane model. The company is expected to outline changes to software that controls a system created to automatically prevent a mid-flight stall. According to some media reports, the Lion Air captain was hastily looking through the plane's technical documentation trying to figure out how to switch off MCAS, which was reportedly pushing the plane's nose down.

Pilots in the October crash in Indonesia appeared to struggle against an automated feature known as MCAS, which is created to push the nose of the plane down if an external sensor detects the plane may be stalling, according to a preliminary report.

Dan Elwell, the acting FAA administrator, will tell members of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation's Subcommittee on Aviation and Space Wednesday afternoon that the agency's "oversight approach needs to evolve", although he will say the processes used to certify the 737 MAX were "extensive, well-established, and have consistently produced safe aircraft designs for decades".

After analyzing the Ethiopian Airlines flight's recovered black box, the Ethiopian Transport Ministry said the crash had "clear similarities" with the Lion Air flight. Oregon Democrat Peter DeFazio said the Max shouldn't be allowed to carry passengers until independent experts approve Boeing's work and ensure that pilots will be trained to fly the plane safely. Let's hope that the actual cause of these fatal crashes are found soon so that these tragedies don't repeat themselves. The Lion Air pilots, on the other hand, had received little training on the system, and it was only after the plane crashed that Boeing first notified pilots of the system's existence. "No passengers were aboard the aircraft", the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement to Business Insider.

In the article published on March 25 by Business Daily and on March 26 by Nation, the publication reported that "KQ will not cancel its orders for the Boeing 737-800 Max jets". Investigations into both crashes are said to be focusing on Boeing's software systems.
