Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un Meet Again: Read Transcript

Kim Jong-un's diplomatic skills have been praised by state media

North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un has told reporters that he would not be at a summit with US President Donald Trump if he were not ready to denuclearise.

Trump and Kim met for the first time last June.

South Koreans watch news about Trump-Kim summit on TV at Seoul station as the North Korean leader and US President meet for a second day of talks in Hanoi.

After holding a working lunch, Kim and Trump plan to sign a joint statement around 2 p.m., according to the White House.

South Korea's presidential Blue House said in a statement that it believes the US and North Korea deepened their understandings of each other during their "long and deep discussions" in Hanoi.

Kim said he would welcome the US opening a liaison office in Pyongyang, while Trump said: "Not a bad idea".

Bong Young-shik, an analyst at Seoul's Yonsei University, was less anxious, saying that the criticism Trump faced in Singapore could make him less likely to make huge, impulsive decisions during his private meetings with Kim this time around.

While one military analyst sees "tangible evidence" of a "ratcheting down of tensions" between the US and North Korea, he worries that the rogue state will benefit without making nuclear concessions.

Asked if this summit would yield a political declaration to end the Korean War, Mr Trump told reporters on Wednesday: "We'll see". We want to be happy with what we're doing. Though both he and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said significant progress had been made in Hanoi, the two sides appeared to be galaxies apart on an agreement that would live up to US stated goals.

"Sincere and in-depth views were exchanged to bring about a comprehensive and groundbreaking outcome", it said.

Trump told reporters that that's what the two are discussing during their second day of talks.

On Thursday, the two leaders are scheduled for a series of meetings at the Metropole, beginning with another one-on-one session lasting 45 minutes, the White House said.

It said Trump's willingness to offer sanctions relief in exchange for broader nuclear disarmament steps by the North shows that the nuclear negotiations have entered an "elevated level".

But the USA leader said Thursday he was in "no rush", appearing to back away from any expectations the much-anticipated meeting could produce any major breakthroughs. Yongbyon is where the regime produces plutonium.

They are under pressure to reach concrete measures after making little progress following a historic first summit previous year.

Kim Jong Un responded to questions from foreign journalists for the first time as he and Donald Trump sought to show they are progressing in bringing North Korea back into the global community.

North Korea has conducted no nuclear or intercontinental ballistic missile tests since late 2017.

President Donald Trump says it's "a good idea" for the U.S.to open a liaison office in North Korea, as Kim Jong Un calls the notion "welcomable".

Trump again touted the possibility of the impoverished North Korea becoming an "economic powerhouse" if it gave up its nuclear arsenal - an outcome analysts say is extremely unlikely.

"Vietnam is thriving like few places on earth".
