Pakistan has shot down two Indian aircraft, military spokesperson says

Pakistani Army soldiers stand guard at the Line of Control the de facto border between Pakistani and Indian administered Kashmir in Azad Kashmir Pakistan on Feb 23 2019

Hundreds of terrorists and their trainers were shifted from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir to a five-star, resort style camp in a hilltop forest in Balakot after the Pulwama attack, providing Indian forces with "a sitting duck target" when they carried out an air strike early Tuesday, killing up to 350 terrorists, sources said.

The country's foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi condemned Tuesday's incursion, and said New Delhi had "endangered" peace in the region for political gains.

There was no confirmation of the reports from Indian government or military officials.

Australian foreign minister Marise Payne has urged Pakistan to take action against extremist groups, including Jaish-e-Mohammed which claimed responsibility for the February 14 attack in the disputed Kashmir region that killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary police.

Pakistan has shot down two Indian Air Force planes in its airspace in Kashmir on Wednesday, an Indian military spokesperson said. "I can't say anything on this right now", he said.

Islamabad has said it had nothing to do with the latest bombing in Kashmir, and has warned it will retaliate if attacked by India.

India's Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale told reporters in New Delhi that Indian fighter jets targeted Jaish-e-Mohammad camps in a pre-emptive strike after intelligence indicated another attack was being planned. He underlined that "no casualties or damage" resulted from the attack.

"India began showering Pakistan with accusations immediately after the attack without any evidence in hand or shared", Ghafoor said.

There has been no immediate explanation for the different accounts but India and Pakistan routinely contradict the other. He had in a televised address also denied any links between the Pakistani state and those who carried out the attack.

In a village 100 metres from the Line of Control (LoC) that acts as the de facto border with Pakistan, men gathered around a bunker for security forces that is under construction and shouted slogans hailing India.

Pakistan's National Security Committee on Tuesday rejected India's claim it was targeting a terrorist camp when Indian aircraft crossed into Pakistani territory earlier in the day and dropped bombs.

"We remain in contact with both countries and what we believe is essential is that all exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalation of tensions", European Union spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic told reporters.

India accuses Pakistan of sheltering and supporting groups like Jaish-e-Muhammad. "Indian aircraft gone back". Pakistan, however, said the aircraft had "released a payload" while escaping from the jets scrambled to intercept it, and claimed it caused no casualties. Since 1989, such groups have waged an insurgency to end Indian rule in Kashmir.
