Ecuador Denies Decision Made to Expel WikiLeaks Founder

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been cooped up in the embassy in the British capital for seven years after claiming asylum

WikiLeaks warned Thursday that its founder "will be expelled within "hours to days" from Ecuador's London embassy and that Ecuador has an agreement with Britain to have him arrested.

Moreno is also said to have tried trade Assange's release for United States debt relief, Wikileaks said.

Nils Melzer on Friday said he's "alarmed by reports" that the WikiLeaks founder may be expelled and wants to personally investigate the case.

Swedish prosecutors dropped their criminal investigation in 2017, though Assange has refused to step foot outside the embassy over fears of arrest by British police and possible extradition to the U.S. for questioning over his activity at WikiLeaks.

Assange sought refuge at the embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faced accusations of sexual assault that prosecutors in Stockholm have since abandoned. The threats drifted in the wake of an INA paper leak, which links Moreno to money laundering and offshore accounts. Moreno denies the allegations.

"Julian Assange could be expelled from the Ecuadorian embassy in London "within hours to days" over the alleged publication of documents depicting the family of the country's president, Lenin Moreno, as corrupt", according to Wikileaks.

The meeting will take place at the Ecuadoran embassy in London, where Assange has been living for more than six years, and would be facilitated by the Ecuadoran government, it said.

While there has been no official confirmation, in November 2018, an administrative mix-up in the USA justice department-that saw Assange's court filing apparently submitted in error-indicated that the WikiLeaks founder's suspicions may indeed be true.

Because of this so-called "breach", Assange will be made to leave the embassy and would be arrested by British authorities.

Mr Moreno said: "Assange can not lie or, much less, hack into private accounts or private phones". The Assange backers fear he could be arrested and subsequently face extradition over the publication of confidential USA military data.

It transpires that the idea of Ecuador evicting Assange was raised in May 2017 when Donald Trump associate Paul Manafort visited Quito.

Mr Moreno the country ordered Assange "not to intervene in the politics of countries, or worse, friendly countries".

The Swedish judiciary has since dropped its investigation, but British authorities have said they will still arrest the Australian when he leaves the embassy because he violated his bail conditions by fleeing.
