Frantic hunt for survivors after powerful Philippine quake

An earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck the central Philippines

According to the national disaster relief agency, on Tuesday, a magnitude-6.5 quake rattled the eastern Philippines, injuring 10 people.

Fourteen of the dead were from Pampanga province, among the hardest hit after a 6.1-magnitude quake struck at 5:11 p.m. local time on Monday, according to the authorities.

The 6.1-magnitude quake damaged many houses, concrete roads, bridges, Roman Catholic churches and an worldwide airport terminal at Clark Freeport, a former American air base, in Pampanga. Classes and office work were suspended in San Julian, where cracks on roads, small buildings, and a church were reported.

According to the NDRRMC, 81 people have been injured and 14 others remain missing.

Three people died when their home was flattened in Porac, said Mayor Condralito dela Cruz.

Rescuers have drilled a large tube to blow in oygen into the wreckage of Chuzon supermarket to help those trapped to breathe. On Tuesday morning, rescuers pulled out a man alive, sparking cheers and applause. A Porac councilor told The Associated Press another victim was expected to be pulled out alive soon.

A supermarket crashed down in Monday's powerful quake, which damaged buildings and an airport in the northern Philippines. In 2013, a major tremor hit Cebu and Bohol provinces in central Philippines, killing more than 200 people.

The U.S. Geological Survey's preliminary estimate is that more than 49 million people were exposed to some shaking from the natural disaster, with more than 14 million people likely to feel moderate shaking or more.

The quake was felt strongly in key business areas of Manila, with residential and office buildings evacuated after being shaken for several minutes.

The Philippines is prone to natural disasters, located on the seismically active Pacific "Ring of Fire", a horse-shoe shaped band of volcanoes and fault lines that circles the edges of the Pacific Ocean.

The government declared Tuesday a holiday for civil servants in Metro Manila to allow for safety inspections of buildings.

A magnitude 7.7 quake killed almost 2,000 people in the northern Philippines in 1990.
