Once Again Confirmed Cases of Measles Skyrocket in Hudson Valley

Measles epidemic spreads to Westchester — 8 unvaccinated kids contract disease

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said people in affected areas will face fines of up to $1,000 if they fail to get vaccinated or vaccinate their children.

In the face of this crisis, schools in Washington and NY are keeping unvaccinated children out of classes, and Rockland County executive Ed May declared that they should be barred from all public places in the county. The declaration comes after the NYC Health Department issued Commissioner's Orders last week to all yeshivas and day care programs serving the Orthodox Jewish community in Williamsburg.

Facing the largest measles outbreak in 28 years, New York City has resorted to mandatory vaccination in one Brooklyn neighborhood, with $1,000 fines for noncompliance. Those who refuse to obey to get the Measles vaccine even during the outbreak will be handled one by one after consulting with the legal team.

The most recent tally by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows 465 cases across the U.S.so far this year, two-thirds of them in NY state.

For more information on the MMR vaccine, talk to your local healthcare provider, or read about vaccination on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website.

Patricia Schnabel Ruppert, the health commissioner of an outlying NY suburban county, is feeling "overwhelmed". Miriam, who also didn't want to give her name due to privacy concerns, said everyone should be vaccinated. "The public health order requires everyone living in the zip codes of 11205, 11206, 11211, and 11249 to get vaccinated within the next 48 hours", Barbot continued.

"It was time to take a more muscular approach", Mayor Bill de Blasio told a news conference as the emergency measures were announced.

This outbreak is a result of mistrust amongst the residents which did not believe in providing vaccine to the children. But unvaccinated children and adults pose very real dangers to infants too young to be vaccinated, to people with compromised immune systems (such as those undergoing cancer treatment), and to pregnant women whose unborn babies can be infected.

The law would not affect the testing of pilots, truck drivers, law enforcers, construction workers, and workers who supervise children or medical patients.

Measles has been confirmed in eight children, ranging in age from 6 months to 14 years old, all of whom live in northern Westchester and were not vaccinated, CBS New York reports.

For those in need of the measles vaccine, the Westchester County Health Department will be offering free measles, mumps, and rubella shots during three clinics. In response, anti-vaccination protesters have begun wearing yellow stars, claiming that rules based on vaccination status are analogous to the inhumane treatment of Jews during the Holocaust.

"People who are unvaccinated for any reason, including those who refuse vaccination, risk getting infected with measles and spreading it to others", the CDC reports in a frequently asked questions article. Officials said the children all appear to have been exposed to measles in Rockland County or Brooklyn.
