Post-ASAT, India sees role in drafting space laws

The flying robots are propelled by fans and can move in any direction and turn on any axis in space

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy National Security Adviser Pankaj Saran said that India was actively engaged in all relevant worldwide negotiations about the outer space.

NASA chief Jim Bridenstine earlier this week said the successful test of an anti-satellite weapon had create high-velocity debris that poses a threat to other spacecrafts, including the International Space Station.

The Ministry of External Affairs in a statement stated that the technological test was carried out to verify that India has the capability to safeguard its space assets.

The ASAT missile launch last month drew criticism from NASA as it condemned the mission for ignoring safety concerns in the space, especially threat to the International Space Station (ISS).

On the issue of weaponisation of space, the DRDO chief said it is a decision the government has to take.

Reddy, at a briefing held at the DRDO Bhawan here, said the interceptor had the capability to intercept satellites in orbit of 1,000 km. On Thursday, Bridenstine had reportedly promised to continue its cooperation with the Indian Space Research Organisation.

With 830 satellites, U.S. leads the world in the number of satellites, followed by China with 280 satellites.

"That is a bad, awful thing to create an event that sends debris at an apogee that goes above the International Space Station [ISS]".

On March 27, India shot down one of its satellites in space with an ASAT missile, which made it only the fourth country after the USA, the USSR and China to have used such a weapon.

India shot down one of its satellites in space on March 27 with an anti-satellite (A-SAT) missile to demonstrate this complex capability, joining the elite club of countries - the US, Russia and China - which have such capabilities. On March 27, India achieved a historic accomplishment by firing down its low orbit satellite.

China destroyed a satellite in a polar orbit, altitude in excess of 800 km (500 miles) in 2007, creating the largest orbital debris cloud in history with more than 3,000 objects, according to the Secure World Foundation.

Cleaning up space is the mission of a new Swiss start-up, ClearSpace, which will capitalise on technology developed by engineers at The Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL).
