South Korea launches world’s first 5G phone

Samsung Galaxy S10’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor fooled by 3D-printed fingerprint: Report

On April 3 the South became the first country to launch nationwide 5G services, with three superfast networks going live offering data speeds that allow users to download entire movies in less than a second. That was until leaks blogger Evan Blass tweeted out a cryptic message today. Verizon will open Samsung Galaxy S10 5G pre-orders on April 18, but the smartphone will hit shelves one month later, on May 16.

The S10 5G is the largest of the S10 series with a 6.7-inch display, a triple rear camera system with time-of-flight sensor, and a class-leading 4,500mAh battery - a massive arsenal when put up against Motorola's Moto Z3 and its accompanying 5G Moto Mod, also on Verizon.

The introduction of the Galaxy S10 5G is a key milestone in Samsung's research and development that also includes key breakthroughs like the world's first gigabit speed 5G transmission, the first 5G handover between multiple cells, and now, its first 5G smartphone available on the market.

Commercialising 5G gives South Korea the chance to build around the technology, which is crucial for the future development of devices such as autonomous vehicles and the Internet of Things. The main Galaxy Note 10 model is now said to have four cameras, just like the Galaxy S10 5G.

The user further mentioned that a DSLR can capture much better images of a fingerprint, which can be used to create such 3D printed slides that can fool the Samsung Galaxy S10's in-display fingerprint sensor.

Samsung announced its new-generation flagship Galaxy S10 smartphone lineup in an Unpacked event held in San Francisco back in February 2019. Furthermore, OnePlus already confirmed that its first 5G device would be available on British carrier EE this quarter, aiming for a sub-$1,000 price.
