United Kingdom cautiously gives Huawei the nod for 5G network gear sales

Theresa May is facing calls for a full police inquiry after the leak of secret discussions by the UK's top national security body

He tweeted "There's a reason others have said no" referring to the US, Australia, and New Zealand.

Ms James also told Sky News that a final decision has not been made, although she indicated that a security review had concluded.

"Huawei welcomes reports that the United Kingdom government is moving towards allowing Huawei to help build the UK's 5G network", it said in a brief statement.

The US have continually pointed out Huawei's ties to the Chinese government as well as emphasising China's National Intelligence Law that says organisations must "support, co-operate with and collaborate in national intelligence work".

European nations are treading a fine line in the dispute between the world's two most powerful countries, under pressure from the United States to take a hard line on Huawei but also anxious not to sour trading and diplomatic relations with China. Furthermore, the National Cyber Security Centre, part of GCHQ, previously suggested companies such as Huawei could be kept out of the sensitive parts of 5G networks and be closely watched via enhanced monitoring.

Downing Street refused to comment on the report.

A range of ministers spoke at the NSC meeting, with Philip Hammond, the chancellor, Greg Clark, the business secretary, and David Lidington, May's effective deputy, among those content to go along with a partial ban.

"Allowing Huawei into the UK's 5G infrastructure would cause allies to doubt our ability to keep data secure and erode the trust essential to Five Eyes cooperation", said Tom Tugendhat, the chairman of Britain's Foreign Affairs Committee.

The National Security Council's move merely cements Britain's existing position and represents a pragmatic, official acknowledgement that Huawei 5G equipment is technically up there.

But the former United States homeland security adviser Tom Bossert said: "I think it is a little overly rosy and optimistic to suspect that [risks] can be mitigated in new 5G infrastructure ..."

Home secretary Sajid Javid, foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt and defence secretary Gavin Williamson are all said to have raised concerns about the verdict.

The U.S.is keen that Five Eyes members do not involve Huawei in 5G development, as it could afford the Chinese Communist Party regime a back door to spy on their activities.

The world's leading intelligence-sharing network - the anglophone Five Eyes alliance of the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand - will not use technology from Huawei in its most sensitive networks, a US official said.

A Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport spokeswoman said the security and resilience of the UK's telecoms networks is of "paramount importance".
