US' Mike Pence urges United Nations to recognize Venezuela's Guaido

Pence confronts Venezuelan ambassador at UN: ‘You shouldn’t be here’

The remark comes after earlier in the day, US Vice President Mike Pence urged the United Nations to strip Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's government off its UN credentials.

The IMF's projections also reveal a 10 percent fall in Venezuela's economic activity overall due to the country's "worst crisis" ever.

Pence went on to say the U.S is working on a resolution in support of Guaido, and he's calling on all United Nations member states to support it.

However, it was extremely unlikely that the UN Security Council would approve the US-proposed resolution.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is to expand its operations in crisis-hit Venezuela, the aid agency said on Thursday, after reaching an agreement with President Nicolas Maduro.

The United States would need strong support in the 193-member General Assembly to change Venezuela's credentials from the Maduro government to Guaido, and with only 54 countries now supporting Guaido as Venezuela's interim president, it faces an uphill struggle.

The United States and more than 50 other countries recognize Guaido as interim president. Maduro has noted the humanitarian assistance his country has been receiving from its long-time allies, such as China, Russia, Turkey and India as well as the The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Borrowing Trump's campaign slogan "Make America Great Again", Nebenzia said: "If you want to make America great again, and we're all sincerely interested in seeing that, stop interfering in the affairs of other states".

Although Maduro and his socialist ruling party enjoy support from many poor and working-class Venezuelans, his government has been facing its toughest challenge to date from Guaidó, who has highlighted the country's plummeting economy, as well as the exodus of Venezuelans, in calling for Maduro's ouster.

"Now it's time for the United Nations to act, and for the world to stand with the people of Venezuela as they march for freedom", he added. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has said there is no crisis and blames USA sanctions for the country's economic problems.

At least 3.4 million Venezuelans have left the country over its humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations predicting this will rise to about five million by the end of the year.

He stressed that it was important that the humanitarian supplies come into Venezuela with no political strings attached but with "respect to the sovereignty" of the country and "without politicization of any kind or misrepresentation".
