Whistleblower says White House overturned 25 denied security clearances

FBI Whistleblower: Kushner was one of 25 Trump Officials to Have Security Clearance Overridden

Those officials - including Ivanka Trump and Kushner - received security clearances despite "disqualifying issues" in their backgrounds, such as concerns about foreign influence, drug use and criminal conduct.

Ms Newbold's allegations were laid out in a letter written by Elijah Cummings, chairman of the committee, and sent to the White House on Monday.

The committee also requested information from the Executive Office of the President People Information Center database for nine current and former White House officials, including Kushner, Ivanka and National Security Adviser John Bolton. Democrats on the panel released a summary of her interview, conducted over the weekend, raising new questions about how and why the White House issued security clearances to, among others, Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law.

"I would not be doing a service to myself, my country, or my children if I sat back knowing that the issues that we have could impact national security", Newbold told the committee.

"But what I can say is that over the last few years that I've been here, I've been accused of all different types of things, and all of those things have turned out to be false", he said.

"I feel that right now this is my last hope to really bring the integrity back into our office".

Previous year the White House was also questioned about the security clearance granted to Trump aide Rob Porter despite domestic abuse allegations from two ex-wives.

Flynn was forced out of the White House within weeks after questions were raised about his private discussions with Russia's USA ambassador, as well as other foreign business dealings.

In a letter, the oversight committee requested that the White House turn over a list identifying the 25 individuals.

Jordan complained Cummings scheduled the meeting with her on a Saturday and didn't tell the Republicans until the day before.

She said she raised her concerns up the chain of command in the White House to no avail.

On the issue of the citizenship question, Democrats say they want specific documents that will determine why Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross made a decision to add the question.

Rep. Jim Jordan of OH, the committee's ranking Republican, said in a statement that Cummings' probe is a "partisan attack" and an "excuse to go fishing" through personnel files.

A number of those individuals, she told the committee, eventually were denied permanent clearances, including two high-level officials.

Ms Newbold, who works as an adjudications manager in the White House Personnel Security Office, cited "grave" security risks arising from the intervention of her colleagues.

Mr Kline also approved a clearance for that unnamed official.

The ranking Republican on the Oversight and Reform Committee, Rep. Jim Jordan of OH, said in a statement that "Cummings' investigation is not about restoring integrity to the security clearance process, it is an excuse to go fishing through the personal files of dedicated public servants".
