Rioting breaks out in Venezuela as Maduro claims victory over 'attempted coup'

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido posted a video if himself near the Generalisimo Francisco de Miranda Airbase in Caracas

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Maduro had been prepared to leave the country on Tuesday morning, but Russian Federation urged him to remain.

An anti-government protester, right, takes cover amid rebel troops who are rising up against the government of Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro, on an overpass outside La Carlota military airbase as they confront loyal troops at the base.

"With the support of the Venezuelan people and the backing of our constitution they are on the right side of history", he said, while urging on the rest of the military to defect. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also denied the USA claims, telling CNN that "Washington tried its best to demoralize the Venezuelan army and now used fakes as a part of information war".

A Reuters journalist saw security forces firing tear gas at Guaido and around 70 armed men in military uniform near the La Carlota air force base in Caracas.

The president also announced the appointment of "three special prosecutors" to examine "criminal" actions by the opposition, noting that "we have colonels wounded by bullets and in intensive care", following the violence instigated by dissidents.

In a live televised address Tuesday night, his first since the apparent uprising began, Maduro rejected claims he has lost control of the military and accused "imperialist" forces of seeking "to attack and overthrow a legitimate government to enslave Venezuela".

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said the United States would hit Cuba with sanctions and an embargo if it continued its military support for Maduro's government.

"As of now, there is no indication of any military support outside of this very small detachment of troops", reporter Lucas Koerner told RT America from Caracas, claiming that many officers had been deceived into believing that Tuesday's events were a "drill led by the government".

The two leaders clashing over rightful leadership are sitting President Nicolas Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaido.

Maduro calls Guaido a U.S-backed puppet who seeks to oust him in a coup.

"He was headed for Havana", Mike Pompeo said on CNN.

Pro- and anti-Maduro demonstrations were held outside the Venezuelan embassies in several Latin American and European capitals.

"All agreed that Maduro had to go".

"Today, courageous soldiers, fearless patriots, courageous men loyal to the Constitution have followed our call", said Mr Guaido, who is also president of the country's National Assembly.

Trump has rolled back parts of predecessor Barack Obama's historic rapprochement with Cuba and returned to Cold War-style rhetoric.

The U.S. and about 50 other nations take the position that Maduro's re-election past year was irrevocably marred by fraud and he is not the legitimate president of Venezuela, a once prosperous nation that has the world's largest proven oil reserves.
