Border official resigns amid uproar over migrant children

Government Removes Migrant Children From Detention Facility After Reports of Dire Conditions

Only about 30 children remained at the station outside El Paso on Monday, Rep. Veronica Escobar said after her office was briefed on the situation by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection official.

Attorneys involved in monitoring care for migrant children who visited Clint last week said older children were trying to take care of toddlers, The Associated Press reported Thursday. Some had been detained for three weeks, and 15 children were sick with the flu.

Although it's unclear where all the children held at Clint were moved, Escobar said some were sent to another facility on the north side of El Paso called Border Patrol Station 1.

Stauffer acknowledged that unaccompanied migrant children are "waiting too long in CBP facilities that are not created to care for children", a result, she says, of the "unprecedented" number of children arriving.

That's how lawyer Holly Cooper described the conditions inside a Texas border station, where the children were being held without access to hygiene products and essential care.

Fox News reported that Sanders' departure announcement came amid House lawmakers' continued struggle to agree on a $4.5 billion funding bill aimed at addressing the escalation humanitarian crisis at the U.S. -Mexico border.

Many children were moved out of the facility in recent days.

"Seeing our country at this crucible moment where we have forsaken children and failed to see them as human is hopefully a wake up for this country to move toward change".

"There was nobody taking care of these children. they were not being bathed on a regular basis", Prof Warren Binford of Williamette University in OR told the BBC after visiting the Clint facility in Texas. Sarah Fabian told an incredulous three-judge panel at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco that the agreement requiring sanitary conditions for detained immigrant children may not necessarily mean a toothbrush and soap must be provided for shorter stays.

The acting head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection resigned Tuesday amid an uproar over the discovery of migrant children being held in filthy conditions at one of the agency's stations in Texas.

CBP officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, on Tuesday denied the allegations of mistreatment but said an internal investigation was underway. At the McAllen center, Gialluca said, everyone she spoke with said they sought out Border Patrol agents after crossing the Rio Grande so they could request asylum.

Elora Mukherjee, another lawyer who visited the facility, told CBS News: "They were wearing the same dirty clothing they crossed the border with".

Gialluca and a slew of other lawyers have been meeting with children and young mothers at facilities across the state this month as pro bono attorneys.

In a statement, the border authority acknowledged that the Clint facility was not suited to the task. "It's a health crisis. a manufactured health crisis", she said".
