U.S. FAA says it identifies new potential risk on 737 MAX

The FAA has recently discovered a "potential risk" on the grounded Boeing 737 MAX that it is requiring Boeing to mitigate before the aircraft can be returned to service, according to a statement by the agency on Wednesday.

Boeing is still working to fix the safety system that has been blamed for the deadly crashes and needs the Federal Aviation Administration to give the jet the green light before it can hit the skies again, according to KING 5.

A series of simulator flights to test new software has uncovered a previously unknown flaw in the Boeing 737 Max computer system.

The family of 737 Max aircraft will not receive certification from the FAA until it has satisfied all requirements and is safe to return to service, the company said.

In contrast, the last official word from the FAA was that Boeing's jets may get approval by late June.

In a tweet, the FAA said: "On the most recent issue, the FAA's process is created to discover and highlight potential risks".

"Boeing agrees with the FAA's decision and request, and is working on the required software", the company said in a statement.

American Airlines and Southwest Airlines already canceled flights up until early September due to the grounding.

After a tragic crash in Ethiopia that killed 157 people earlier this year, countries around the world grounded Boeing 737 MAX aircrafts.

The issue, which surfaced during FAA simulator testing, concerns the ability of pilots to quickly reassert control of the plane if an automated flight handling system pushes the plane downward, said a person familiar with the matter.

The filing said the FAA had asked Boeing "to address, through the software changes to the 737 MAX that the company has been developing for the past eight months, a specific condition of flight, which the planned software changes do not presently address".

One said the latest setback is likely to delay the plane's return to service by an extra one to three months.

Just as MCAS uses a motor to move a small wing at the tail of the plane to lower the nose, the latest issue could prompt that same wing to move without pilot commands.

A 737 Max pilot who is choosing to remain anonymous is suing Boeing for "demonstrated reckless indifference and conscious disregard for the flying public", CNN is reporting.

A statement from the regulatory agency says as part of a process created to discover and highlight potential risks, "the FAA found a potential risk that Boeing must mitigate".
