ESPN said Friday that former New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi, the three-time Super Bowl champion and now an ESPN analyst, suffered a stroke Thursday.

His family announced the news in a statement Friday noting that Bruschi recognized the warning signs and is "recovering well".

Tedy's Team is the foundation Bruschi started in 2005 after he suffered a stroke at the age of 31, when he suffered a stroke days after the 2005 Super Bowl. Following several months of rehabilitation, he returned to the field on October 29, 2005, and went on to be named AFC Defensive Player of the Week. "Tedy and his family thank you for your ongoing encouragement, and kindly ask for privacy at this time".

Bruschi, a linebacker who was elected to the Pro Bowl in 2004, played 13 seasons for the Patriots. 'And I'm very proud of that'.

'Often called a ministroke, a transient ischemic attack may be a warning, ' reads the article on the May Clinic website.

Bruschi joined ESPN as an analyst shortly after his retirement.

While some former National Football League players have fallen out of shape in retirement, Bruschi, a Pro Bowl selection in 2004, took up distance running and has completed the Boston Marathon three times - most recently back in April.

Bruschi and his wife, Heidi, worked with the American Stroke Association to create Tedy's Team, which "fight (s) against stroke and heart disease and honors both the survivors and the loved ones lost to the nation's No. 1 and No. 5 leading causes of death and No. 1 leading cause of disability".
