Photos of migrants overcrowding Texas border facilities released by Inspector General

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Clapped Back at the Secret Border Patrol Facebook Group by Actually Visiting the Border

"We are concerned that overcrowding and prolonged detention represent an immediate risk to the health and safety of DHS agents and officers, and to those detained", the report said.

Families are crowded into the Border Patrol's Weslaco Station in Texas, this photo from the Office of Inspector General shows.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who toured border detention centers with a group of Democratic lawmakers on Monday, blasted "Fox & Friends" host Brian Kilmeade for comparing conditions at the facilities to a party at a house with few bathrooms.

An El Paso Border Patrol official on Monday confirmed the bad conditions at the migrant detention centers, including a culture of border agents' derogatory treatment of the detainees.

Acting U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan has called some of the derogatory and sexually explicit posts in a secret Border Patrol Facebook group "disturbing" and "inexcusable".

Migrants banged on cell windows and shouted when investigators visited.

The Rio Grande Valley is the busiest area of the border for migrant arrests, which hit a 13-year monthly high in May during a surge in the arrival of Central American families.

"These posts are completely inappropriate and contrary to the honor and integrity I see-and expect-from our agents day in and day out", said U.S. Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost in a public statement.

"Posts on the group's page included jokes about migrants" deaths, obscene GIFs and doctored images of Hispanic lawmakers, the report said. The representative also tweeted that CBP agents woke migrants up "at odd hours for no reason, calling them wh*res, etc.", expressed indignation that the agents were allegedly "laughing in front of members Congress", and criticized their supervisors for stating that CBP agents are "under stress".

"They put their lives in danger every single day".

"Without Congressional action to address legal and judicial loopholes, families and [unaccompanied A children] will continue to be incentivized by the smuggling organizations to make the unsafe journey and be encouraged by the likelihood that families will not be detained during their immigration proceedings", a DHS response contained in the report reads. He said the trip to the border re-solidified his support for President Donald Trump's border wall proposal. "There seems to be open contempt for the rule of law and for basic human decency". 10-15 is Border Patrol code for "aliens in custody".

The detention facilities have become an issue among Democratic candidates vying to face Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

As CBP mentioned above, US border facilities are not built for long-term holding.

Members of a congressional group visiting facilities in El Paso on Monday said migrants were being kept in deplorable conditions.

The Tennessee pastor also said that he "saw people in that detention center who demonstrated a true care and concern for those children" and that "there was not one child that looked malnourished, that looked unfed, that looked unkempt".

The demonstrations were fueled by fears the Trump administration is preparing a roundup of immigrants who are in the country illegally.

Trump, meanwhile, looked to stir up support for his policies, promising immigration raids after the July 4 US holiday to arrest migrants with deportation orders.

Some of the most gruesome posts targeted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, just before the NY congresswoman and almost a dozen other legislators organized by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus - including three Massachusetts House representatives - toured a detention center in Clint, Texas.

Ocasio-Cortez, a first-term New York Democrat, suggested in a Twitter post on Tuesday that the CBP was a "rogue agency".
